Dealer vs independent workshop: warranty myths, answered.

The single question that keeps owners overpaying at the dealer — answered plainly, with what actually protects your warranty and what does not.

“If I don’t service at the dealer, my warranty is void.” It is the most expensive sentence in car ownership, repeated so often that it feels like law. It is not. For most European cars in Saudi Arabia, you can service at a qualified independent workshop and keep your manufacturer warranty fully intact — if you do it correctly. Here is exactly how the rules work, and where the myths fall apart.

The myth: “only the dealer can touch my car under warranty”

What a manufacturer warranty actually requires is that the car is serviced on schedule, with parts that meet the manufacturer’s specification, and that the work is documented. It does not require that the servicing happens at a dealership. A warranty covers manufacturing defects; it is not a contract that locks you to one service location. Dealers rarely volunteer this, because scheduled servicing is a major profit centre — but the obligation is on the standard of the service, not the address of the workshop.

What genuinely can affect a warranty claim

There are real ways to give a manufacturer grounds to decline a specific claim, and they are worth knowing precisely:

Wrong or unapproved parts and fluids. Fitting an oil that does not meet the manufacturer specification, or a non-conforming filter, and then having an oil-related failure — that is a legitimate opening for a declined claim. The fix is simple: approved-spec fluids and genuine or quality OEM parts, recorded on the invoice.

Missed or undocumented services. If the service history has gaps, the manufacturer can argue the car was not maintained. A complete, stamped, dated record with mileage closes that argument.

A repair that caused the failure. If poor workmanship on a specific job caused a specific failure, that component claim can be challenged. This is about the quality of the shop, not whether it is a dealership.

Notice what is not on this list: simply choosing an independent workshop. Servicing correctly at a good independent affects none of the above.

How to service independently and stay fully covered

Four habits keep your position airtight. Use approved-specification fluids and genuine or OEM parts, every time. Keep every invoice — itemised, dated, with mileage and the parts named. Have your service book stamped at each visit. And follow the manufacturer’s schedule, not a shortened “quick service” calendar invented to sell more visits. At EuroHub all four are standard: schedule-correct servicing, genuine or OEM parts named on every invoice, a stamped book, and a photographed digital record that travels with the car. Read the specifics in our warranty and parts policy.

The honest exception

Sometimes the dealer is the right answer, and a workshop that never says so is not being straight with you. Open recall campaigns and goodwill repairs on a known defect are handled by the dealer at no cost — take those there. A component still under a specific extended warranty is usually cheaper to claim than to pay for. We will tell you when a job belongs at the dealer before you spend a riyal with us; that honesty is the whole point.

What you actually save

For the same scope — the same approved oil, the same genuine parts, the same schedule — an independent specialist typically prices meaningfully below dealership labour rates, with no compromise to your warranty position. Over a car’s ownership that is thousands of riyals, kept in your pocket rather than spent on a building’s overhead.
