Why your car overheats in Jeddah traffic — and exactly what to do when it does.

Your car can run all day on the open road and then start to overheat the moment you hit stationary traffic on a Jeddah afternoon. That is not bad luck — it is the exact combination cooling systems fear most: maximum heat, minimum airflow, and an engine still working to keep you moving an inch at a time. Here is why it happens, what to do the second you see the needle rise (getting this wrong is what turns a small repair into a new engine), and the faults that actually cause it.

Why does my car overheat in traffic but not on the highway?

At speed, air is forced through the radiator whether the cooling fan works or not — the motion of the car does the cooling for you. In stop-and-go traffic that free airflow disappears, and the whole job falls to the electric cooling fan and a healthy system. So a car that overheats crawling in traffic but runs cool on the move is telling you something specific: either the fan isn’t pulling its weight, or the system has so little margin left that it only copes when the road helps it. In Jeddah’s heat that margin is thin to begin with, which is why summer traffic is where a marginal cooling system finally shows itself.

What should I do the moment the temperature gauge climbs?

This is the part worth memorising, because the first two minutes decide whether this costs hundreds or tens of thousands. The instant the gauge goes past normal or a temperature warning appears: turn the A/C off and the heater on full — uncomfortable, yes, but the heater dumps engine heat into the cabin and can buy you real margin. If you’re in traffic, find the first safe place to pull over and switch the engine off; idling while overheating just keeps cooking it. And the rule that saves engines: never open the coolant cap on a hot engine. The system is under pressure and will spray boiling coolant. Wait for it to cool, or better, call for help. Driving on “just a little further” while the gauge is in the red is the single most expensive decision a driver makes.

The common causes, from cheap to serious

Low or lost coolant. The most common cause, and often a symptom of a leak rather than simple neglect — a weeping hose, radiator, or water pump. Topping it up without finding the leak just delays the next boil-over.

A stuck thermostat. If it jams closed, coolant can’t circulate to the radiator and the engine overheats even with a full system. A relatively small part with an outsized effect.

A failing water pump. The pump that moves coolant around the engine wears and weeps, especially in the heat; a failing one can’t keep circulation up under load.

A cooling fan that isn’t running. The exact part traffic depends on. A dead fan motor, a failed relay, or a sensor that never tells the fan to spin will show up precisely when you stop moving.

A blocked or tired radiator. Years of heat and dust reduce how much it can shed; a partially blocked radiator copes on the highway and fails in traffic.

Head gasket or deeper trouble. The serious end. Overheating that keeps returning, coolant disappearing with no visible leak, white exhaust smoke, or bubbling in the coolant point to a head gasket — which is exactly why a single overheating episode should be diagnosed, not just topped up and forgotten.

Why European cars feel this more in Jeddah

Modern Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW and Porsche models run a lot of the cooling system in engineered plastic — housings, thermostat units, coolant flanges and pipes that are light and efficient when new and brittle after years of 45°C heat cycling.
