No puddle on the floor. That is not good news.

If your V8 Cayenne is losing coolant and there is nothing on the driveway, stop looking underneath. On this engine the coolant pipes run through the valley beneath the intake manifold, and what leaks there evaporates on hot metal before it can drip.

This is one of the better-known faults on the V8 Cayenne, and it is one of the few where the diagnosis is genuinely counter-intuitive. Owners look for a puddle, find none, and conclude the coolant is going somewhere mysterious. It is not mysterious. It is going into the engine valley and boiling off.

Where the pipes are, and why they fail

On the 4.8-litre V8 Cayenne, coolant is routed between the cylinder heads through pipework that sits deep in the engine valley, underneath the intake manifold. You cannot see it with the bonnet open. You cannot see it from below either.

The early V8 cars used plastic pipes there. Plastic in that position does exactly what plastic does when it is heat-cycled for years: it goes brittle and cracks, usually at the joints rather than along the run. Later cars moved to a revised arrangement with bonded connectors, which improved matters and did not end them — those joints have their own history of letting go.

Worth saying clearly, because it saves some owners a fright: the V6 Cayenne uses a different cooling layout and does not have this fault. This is a V8 problem.

The failure mechanism is heat cycling — the material expanding and contracting through thousands of hot-cold cycles until it loses its flexibility. That is a fair description of what a Jeddah summer does to a car, repeated daily, for years.

The symptoms, in the order you will meet them

1. The coolant level drops and there is no puddle. This is the signature. Anything else on this list can be caused by half a dozen faults; this combination points here.

2. A sweet smell under the bonnet, or through the vents on start-up. Coolant evaporating off hot metal.

3. White or crystalline residue in the valley — the dried remains of what evaporated. This is visible once the manifold comes off, and it is the confirmation.

4. The temperature gauge sitting above where it used to. Not overheating yet. Just higher than normal, which most people notice and then stop noticing.

5. The low coolant warning. By this point you have been losing it for a while.

The mileage band where this typically appears is roughly 80,000 to 150,000 km, though in this climate age matters as much as distance.

Why not to leave it

A slow coolant loss becomes an overheat, and an overheat on this engine risks warped cylinder heads and a failed head gasket. That is the difference between a substantial job and a very much larger one. The pipes are the cheap part of this story and they stay cheap only while they are the whole story.

What else leaks coolant on a Cayenne

Before anyone takes a manifold off, the other candidates deserve ruling out properly, because they are common too.

The water pump. Bearing wear produces a wobble, sometimes a knock, usually with a visible leak at the pump itself.

The thermostat. Electronically controlled on these cars, and it fails both ways — stuck open means the engine never reaches temperature, stuck closed means it overheats.

The expansion tank, which cracks with age and heat like anything else made of plastic and asked to live in an engine bay in this city.

A pressure test tells you which of these you have. Guessing does not, and a manifold-off job started on a guess is an expensive way to learn.

What the repair actually involves

Done properly this is a six to eight hour job. The intake manifold comes off. The pipes are replaced. The valley pan gasket goes back new, because it has to come off to get there and reusing it is how you end up doing this twice. While the manifold is off and the water pump and thermostat are accessible, they get inspected — the labour to reach them is already spent, and finding out six months later that the pump was marginal is a genuinely annoying way to spend the money again.

Then the system is flushed and pressure tested before the car goes anywhere.
