Saudi Civil Defence issued a flash-flood warning covering Jeddah, Rabigh, Khulais, Bahrah and Al Kamil on 7 December 2025. That was an ordinary winter here, not an exceptional one. The season runs roughly November to January, and every year the same cars come through the same water.
We are publishing this in August deliberately, so it is read before anyone needs it.
What actually happens: hydrolock
An engine works by compressing air. Air compresses. Water does not.
If water is drawn into a cylinder and the piston comes up on the compression stroke, it meets something it cannot squeeze. The force has to go somewhere, and it goes into the metal. The connecting rod is usually what fails first — it bends, or it breaks. Sometimes the piston cracks. Occasionally the cylinder wall is damaged.
None of those are wear items. Every one of them means the engine comes apart.
The car does not have to be submerged
This is the part people get wrong. Water only has to reach the air intake opening. On a modern car — and particularly on a turbocharged European engine — that intake sits low, behind the bumper or in the wheel arch, precisely where the air is coolest and densest.
So the relevant question in standing water is not how deep it looks against your door. It is where your intake is. And you almost certainly do not know, which is the honest argument for not driving into it at all.
There is a second mechanism worth knowing: a bow wave. Moving slowly through water pushes a wall of it ahead of the car and keeps the level low at the front. Accelerating, or following someone closely, collapses that and lifts water straight into the intake.
If the engine stops in water, do not restart it
This is the single most important sentence on this page.
An engine that has stalled in water may have taken water in without yet hydrolocking. Turning the key is what completes the damage. A car that could have been dried out and saved becomes a car that needs an engine, and it happens because someone tried the ignition twice.
Do not restart it. Get out safely, get the car recovered, and let someone check the intake, the filter and the oil before it turns over again. We covered the safe procedure for a car that has stopped in when your car stops in Jeddah.
What we check on a car that has been through water
Before anything is started: the air filter — a wet or silt-marked filter tells the story immediately. The intake tract for standing water. The engine oil, for the milky look that means water has got into it. On a car that ingested water and stopped, the plugs come out before it is cranked at all.
Then the things people forget. Water and dust get into wheel bearings and CV boots. Brake fluid absorbs water; so does the brake system through a flooded caliper seal. Control modules sit low in a lot of European cars, and electrical faults from a flood can appear weeks later, which is why they are so often blamed on something else. Carpet that stayed damp in this humidity grows mould, and the smell is the least of it — the wiring looms run underneath.
The used-car half: flood cars get cleaned up and sold
After a bad winter, water-damaged cars enter the market looking fine. They are cheap, they are shiny, and they are somebody else’s problem being transferred to you.
Where to look: silt lines in the spare wheel well and under the boot carpet, which are almost never cleaned properly. Rust on unpainted metal in odd places — seat rails, seat-belt bolts, the underside of the dashboard bracket. Damp or mismatched carpet, or a car that smells strongly of air freshener. Fogging inside light units. Corrosion on connector pins under the seats or in the boot.
Then check the records rather than trusting your eyes — the history report and the paperwork are covered in the used car checks that are not mechanical, and a full pre-purchase inspection puts the car on a lift where the silt lives.
Before the season
Two things worth doing in October rather than in January. Check your wiper blades, which bake to uselessness in a Jeddah summer and are then asked to work in the one week they matter.
