Finding it is the job. Fixing it is the easy part.

Almost every expensive Porsche oil leak story starts the same way: something was replaced because that is where the oil appeared, and the oil kept appearing. Oil travels. Where it drips tells you very little about where it left the engine.

There is no single Porsche oil leak. There is a list, the list is long, and several entries on it produce oil in more or less the same place on the floor. The difference between them is the difference between a gasket and a gearbox out.

So this article is mostly about identification, because that is where the money is either saved or wasted.

The list, roughly in order of how often we find them

Valve cover and cam cover gaskets. The sealant hardens with age and heat. Oil weeps down the side of the head and finds its way to somewhere far more dramatic-looking.

Camshaft adjuster solenoid seals. Small, cheap, and a genuinely common source.

The oil separator, or AOS. Part of the crankcase ventilation system. When it fails it can produce oil consumption and smoke as well as a leak, which is why it gets misdiagnosed as something much worse.

Oil filter housing and oil cooler seals. Often overlooked because the area is usually oily anyway.

Timing chain covers. Slow, persistent, and awkward.

The sump gasket. The obvious one, and often not the one.

Spark plug tube seals, which leak into the plug wells rather than onto the ground — so you get misfires rather than drips, and nobody thinks about oil at all.

Turbo oil feed and return lines on the V8 Turbo cars.

The rear main seal. Its own section below, because it is its own conversation.

The rear main seal

The RMS sits between the engine and the gearbox, and it is the one people have heard of. It is associated above all with the M96 and M97 engines — the 911 in 996 and early 997 form, the Boxster in 986 and early 987 form, and the 2006–2008 Cayman. Porsche redesigned the seal several times over the years, which tells you both that they took it seriously and that it was never entirely solved.

How you recognise it: oil appearing between the engine and the transmission rather than anywhere forward of that, oil consumption that has you topping up more often than you used to, a burnt-oil smell around the bellhousing, and on manual cars clutch slip or chatter as oil finds the friction surface.

The repair means the gearbox comes out. That is what makes it a different category from everything above it on the list, and it is why getting the diagnosis right first actually matters rather than being a point of professional pride.

The IMS question, answered honestly

If your car is an M96 or M97 and the gearbox is coming out anyway, the intermediate shaft bearing is the thing to think about. It sits in the same area, it is the other well-known failure on these engines, and the labour to reach it is labour you are already paying for. Doing it later means paying to take the gearbox out a second time.

We are going to be straight with you about this: we do not do the IMS bearing upgrade. We do the rear main seal, and we will tell you plainly that if the IMS is something you want addressed, this is the moment it makes economic sense — and it is not a moment we can serve. We would rather say that than let you find out afterwards that the sensible time had come and gone while you were in our workshop.

How we actually find it

With dye and ultraviolet light, not with an opinion.

The engine is cleaned down first, because a Porsche that has been leaking for two years is oily everywhere and tells you nothing. Then a UV-reactive dye goes into the oil, the car runs, and the leak path shows up under UV as a bright trace from where it starts. Following that trace upward to its origin is the entire job.

It matters more in this climate than in a temperate one. Jeddah heat thins oil, ages every seal in the car faster, and burns off enough of a small leak that the evidence disappears between when the car stops and when anyone looks at it. A leak that would leave a clear signature in a European garage often leaves almost nothing here.

What we do

Dye and UV leak diagnosis, so the answer is evidence rather than a guess. The accessible leaks — cam and valve cover gaskets, cam adjuster solenoid seals, the oil separator, oil filter housing and cooler seals, the sump gasket, spark plug tube seals. And the rear main seal, gearbox out, when that is genuinely what it is.

One thing worth doing yourself

Before you bring it in, note where the drips land relative to the car, and whether the oil is fresh and thin or dark and thick. Then put clean cardboard under it overnight. It is a crude test and it genuinely narrows the field, and it costs nothing.

Heat thins oil and ages seals faster, and it burns off enough of a small leak that the evidence often disappears between the car stopping and anyone looking at it. A leak that would leave a clear trail in a temperate climate can leave almost nothing here, which is why we clean the engine down and use UV dye rather than reading the mess.
